Chilodontopsis

Post by RogelioMoreno »

I found this ciliate and I think it is Zosterodasys.

All with Nikon TE-300, Plan Apo 20/0.75, flash and Canon T3i.

#1 is DIC and I think the line that goes from the mouth to the right is the synhymenium.

#2 & 3 are polarized.

It is Chilodontopsis, thanks to Bruce T. for the ID.

Hi Rogelio! Fabulous pictures (but that goes without saying, right?)

It is a Synhymeniid, certainly. However, going by the first picture (the only one that shows the synhymenium), I would tentatively suggest that Chilodontopsis is more likely than Zosterodasys. In Zosterodasys, as described by Deroux in 1978, the synhymenium / hypostomial frange (that oblique line of cilia running just below the mouth opening) extends across the entire ventral surface; whereas, in Chilodontopsis, it is confined mostly to the left side. (see Wang et al, 2012; Deroux, 1978, and many other sources).

Unfortunately, my information on the group isn't complete. A revision of Zosterodasys was published last year (PETER VĎAČNÝ & EVA TIRJAKOVÁ, 2012), but I don't yet have a copy in hand.

If I learn more, I'll let you know. :)

Well, my suggestion is tentative. I do not fully understand the taxonomy of this group. :)
