Huge vacuole inside

Post by Baley »

I don't know what it is;but I thought it was interesting because of the huge vacuole (or whatever that circular thing is).

This could be Lecythium spinosum. It has a pretty large nucleus. Can you supply a scale bar?

I haven't figured out how to do a scale bar yet. this is an uncropped full frame (35mm) image, although there is cropping from what the eyepiece sees.

Thanks for the possible ID. I haven't figured out how to do a scale bar yet. this is an uncropped full frame (35mm) image, although there is cropping from what the eyepiece sees.

It's a ciliate. Look at the hairy mouth.

The big round thing does look like a vacuole, to me. I suspect the large size is a deformity, not a normal trait. I wish I could help with ID..I'm puzzled by the long setae. The overall appearance makes me think it might be Scuticociliate of some kind, but the mouth area (if that is, indeed, the mouth!) has more of a Haptorian look...

Thanks Ferry. I have no idea which end is the mouth.

Thanks for your observations. I'm glad to hear it looks strange to someone besides myself.

The arrow points to the "mouth"

Thanks Ferry. My inexperienced eye can't see any landmarks that would point to a mouth unless it is the smaller end. Both ends look hairy to me.

Once I was inexperienced too... :D But then there was no Internet, I was sitting on an island... Now you can learn much faster, with all those images across the Internet and response in the forum.
