Some sugar and onion from total beginner

The last photo is a crystal of some kind. Of the two possibilities I'd say its likely salt.

I agree, when I let some salt water evaporate I got exactly the same crystal formations.

Salt is isotropic and doesn't exhibit birefringence. Sugar would be a better candidate for a pol test.

I placed salt, sugar and cotton fibers and true, sugar and cotton showed birefringence effect, salt didn't.
