Loose wing scales, old Goerz condenser (DIC images added)

Post by Charles Krebs »

A while back I purchased a new (but quite old... circa 1950's) "Goerz 3D Condenser" on Ebay. Rather odd condenser, and it came with two darkfield "caps" that fit over the top element.

I placed a bit of the "wing scale dust" from the bottom of a sample storage box on a slide and photographed them using a 20/0.70 with one of these caps. The darkfield had a slightly different look from the oiled Zeiss darkfield condenser I normally use with this objective. In many cases I did not care for the effect, but in a few, as in these, the results were interesting and oddly attractive.

I also have one of these interesting condensers, kindly restored by Graham Matthews http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... 3258#53258 In my experience, it works well in darkfield with the appropriate cap. It gives particularly nice results with diatoms (and now I see, butterfly scales) :)

Thanks for the kind remarks!

The darkfield above are with the Olympus S Plan Apo 20/0.70, and both are "stacks", but only two images were needed in each stack.

I am going to add some DIC of this same slide below. These were done with 3 images per stack.
