What makes me concern is that these creatures die 1 hour after putting them in clear tap water....Is this normal?

Chlorine in the tap water? There's enough chlorine in the tap water in the UK to kill sensitive organisms quite quickly. Try clean rain water if you can get it.

Or get the dechlorinator tablets used for freshwater aquariums.
