Amoeba?

Post by pwnell »

Not sure if this is an amoeba, but it sure is interesting. It has these spiderweb like veins through which it pumps the small particles you can see in the photo. Looks like a small ants nest. It does change shape slowly. Taken with 40x objective, DIC. This is also from my reef aquarium.

And a video showing what I was referring to:

Pardon the white noise, just turn down the volume.

Yes, it is an amoeba and truly a beauty! It is a granulofilose one, a group of which we don't know very much. There have been many wrong ID's because workers often relied on old pictures and vague descriptions. I can't even tell you which genus your amoeba belongs to, because I never worked with marine amoeboids. But most important is that you enjoyed this magnificent creature!

Cheers,

Ferry

I have really been enjoying your photos! Can you provide some information about your equipment?

BTW, I am just down the road in S. Delta...nice to see a fellow Vancouverite on the site!

Thanks. I am using this setup:

Nice to know I am not the only one enduring the wet, dark weather here! Perfect though for spending time in front of the microscope. I am in Guildford...

Wow! I have serious microscope envy!!! LOL!

If you are interested in marine protozoans, the sand flats in Boundary Bay (Delta) are a great source in spring.

And yes, it sure has been a dark, wet winter here, hasn't it?
