Thanks, here are a couple more. I've concluded that the crystals are due to the dyes and not preservatives. The green colouring in the second image appears to be a mixture of two dyes.

The food colouring exploration continues, this time with mixed dyes. The brightfield imaging shows the true individual crystal colours. The background colour shows gradation and appears to change over time as the crystals develop and specific dyes come out of solution.

Thanks for the kind comments, I suspect there is a lot to explore with these types of dyes and mixtures with different lighting variations. Here are a couple of mixed dyes following Fredlab lead with DF.

Hi there Linden,
Amazing images, thanks for sharing. I love these crystals under the microscope.
I´ve grown some crystals with ascorbic and citric acid and used polarized light. Amazing colors.
Hope to try with some food colors as well.
One question for you: Will the food color crystals work with polarized light to or only DIC ?
