Not a "quiz"... I don't know.

I'm coming across these pretty regularly in a current sample. I am curious as to what they are... egg?...seed?

Ephippium =
A saddle-shaped cavity to contain the winter eggs, situated on the back of Cladocera.
Cladocera = Water Flea (I included that for my own benefit).
