a small Medusa

Post by Franz Neidl »

Yesterday I had in my samples a small Medusa. The longest of its tentacles was 460 µm long, the body had a diameter from about 250 µm. I know nether the genus nor the species of this marine animal.

Yes, the medusa was looking nice, but it had already very sophistcated weapons! In the second picture you see the Nematocysts ( on the outside of its hollow tentacles).

The third picture is showing one Statocyst (from its 3 statocysts). A statocyst is a balance sensory receptor.
