Cochliopodium vestitum

Post by Ecki »

I would like to introduce this interesting amoeba, Cochliopodium vestitum (Archer 1871), to the forum. Cochliopodium is a discoid shaped amoeba covered by a dorsal tectum of carbohydrate microscales. The form of these microscales is specific to the species and can not be detected with a light microscope.

The next image shows an optical cut through the tectum:

Within Cochliopodium four species with spines were described: C. vestitum (Archer, 1871), C. pilosum (Hertwig et Lesser, 1874), C. echinatum (Korotneff, 1879) und C. longispinum (West, 1901). Today, all of these are regarded as synonyms for C. vestitum (Redescription of Cochliopodium vestitum - Kudryavtsev 2005).

The next images show C. vestitum full of purple bacteria and zoochlorellae. At 2 o'clock there is an opening in the testum where a pseudopodium is visible.

All images of C. vestitum show the same individual. The SEM image happened by accident. I was looking for something else when I stumbled across a strange subject. When I increased the magnification it looked like a Cochliopodium scale.

Eckhard

Great images and that SEM microscale is amazing. Do you know what is the biological function of the microscales? Regards, Des

Thank you Pau, Jacek and Des.
what is the biological function of the microscales?
The tectum is a flexible armored coat. The scales make the armor.
