Thought this was a very interesting subject as it is unusual to most people. What is it?

Hmmm....

Looks like a miniature version of a lighthouse lens. So probably a very small fresnel lens used to "shape" the output of a light beam or LED. But from what component... :smt102

:) 100% correct. It is a small fresnel lens used in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S cameras' LED light, on the back. Quite beautiful actually.
