Arachnoidiscus oamaruensis

Post by Frez »

This looks like a basic garden variety Arachnoidiscus. It's in excellent condition although it's obstructed by a bit of debris in a spot or two.

Upon closer inspection it appears to be exceptionally well constructed. A fine specimen indeed.

BUT!
APOCALYPSE REVEALED
Patiently awaiting the breaking of the sacred glass, the spirit of the Arachnoidiscus prepares to unleash its eight tentacles of despair upon humankind. As protector of the Slide of Entombment, even after copious amounts of Bourbon, I vow to save us all from certain destruction.

We now have proof positive that the spirit world exists a mere phase shift away from our own reality.

...now where's that Bourbon :smt017

Hysterical. Perhaps you should, after the appropriate quantity of Bourbon, consider double-embedding the slide in something with an even higher refractive index, say concrete...just to ensure that the vengeful spirit of the diatom doesn't ever break out of the slide...
Also, IIRC, the Journal of Irreproducible Results used to have a gallery of images like this, neutrophils with smiley face nuclei, bacteria spelling out "take us to your leader"...etc.
And its a great diatom image on its own, even without the discovery of the Diatom of Doom...

One of the freaky things is that this is exactly how it appeared in the eye pieces. The image required no rotation whatsoever. It also did not show up very well with a dark medium phase objective. It had to be a dark low low. I just happened to have the DLL in the nose piece. It also kind of looks like Jim Morrison.

"Diatom of Doom" LOL
