Mastigamoeba

Post by Mitch640 »

I am posting these stills and video as a poor record of this rare amoeba, although my aquarium now seems to be full of them. He is very small, only 25 to 30µm in body length, but his flagella is at least 7 times his body length, but unfortunately, it does not show up well in the video and not at all in the stills. He was also very hard to keep in focus and in the frame, as he was constantly changing depth, if not position.

So, such as they are, here are the video and stills.

Some additional frame grab images shot in Phase Contrast, showing this amoebas flagella.

Hi Mitch,

I know the problem with flagellated protists! The amoeba in focus and the flagellum ALWAYS out of it  But at least you have some nice pictures of the flagellum.

Hi Ferry. I have made a few corrections to the first post. I had my scale all wrong. Instead of 5-7µm he was more like 25-30µm.

It is still hard for me to accept that this is a slow moving amoeba though. He moved pretty fast and he was free swimming. :)
