Diatoms from mountain creek

Post by Charles Krebs »

Went wading in a really pristine mountain creek this afternoon and collected a small gelatinous mass form the side of a rock. Most of it (the interior) was comprised of the mucilage and stalks these diatoms produce. The outer surface was covered in the diatoms connected to the mass via the stalks. The first (smaller image) gives you some idea of what a small section of the outside looked like. In the other two images I tried to isolate some of the diatoms to show their details. While a darkfield condenser was used was used, the mass was so thick that the images do not have the typical darkfield "look".
