Some salt crystals

Post by pwnell »

I thought I could make a stack of this salt crystal to understand its 3D topology, but alas - it only made it worse! Like one of those optical illusions. I think I should try it in stereo:

This crystal looked like a portrait frame:

So naturally I was asked by various female counterparts in my house to mount a coelacanth (I know this is not everyones cup of tea but I thought it looked cool):

Lastly, I played with some intermediate objective DIC slider settings and got this:

All photos were taken under DIC with a 20x objective and between 1.6 and 2 times additional magnification.

Hehe you would think so! But my guess is that the salt crystal "frame" looked old school - and a coelacanth is of just the right age to blend in perfectly ;)

Thanks for the kind comments. Still have a LOT to learn and like Marek told me, crystals are hard work. You can make ten slides and not find what you are looking for.
