Friends!
I have been too silent but that is because I had quite a lot of work. At the moment I am wrestling with my image archive. I have difficulty getting it organised. I don't take new pictures until I have it all organised. Do you know the problem? I should have thrown all the bad pictures away immediately. That is t etrouble with digital images. It becomes a pile that is impossible to take, especially for an unorganised person like me.
But I use a jungle knife now and cut my way through the undergrowth!
So no new postings for me, Except some dirty old pictures I found while archiving
They are of the naughty bits of spiders. There goes my reputation (what was left of it)
This is the pedipalp of a male Dysdera crocata. It is a primitive six-eyed spider that hunts woodlice. I also have a (3D) picture of this spider here:
http://home.tiscali.nl/~t936927/gal/2/index.html Bottom right image.
The pedipalp is a secondary reproductive organ, a modified palp, but I am not sure if I am allowed to explain how it works. But you can see the coiled tube it uses to inseminate the female spider.
Polarised light, 6X objective.

Very interesting photo and comments Wim.
...and yep disorganised filing is the huge downside to digital photography. File and folder naming and organisation is the LAST thing we're interested in when we have just downloaded our latest 2 gigabyte of creative masterpieces - all we want to do is LOOK at our new pics!

Pretty interesting image there Wim. I visited a "hog" or "pig" farm once. Went over to the breeding and gestation area and saw, quite explicitly, how little pigs came about or were made. It was...well...rather remarkable to say the least. Seems as though male hogs or pigs, have a shape to their reproductive organ that looks similar.

Yes, it is strange that we humans seem to be a bit secretive about our own reproduction
Anyway, I forgot to write that this pedipalp was cleared using clove oil. I put it in clove oil for several weeks. Than the chitine becomes more transparent. The nice thing is that the muscles will remain intact. Buy using crossed polars they light up. Oldest trick in the book but always works nice.

Yeah, from some of us that I have observed in the "wild," (I do a lot of wilderness hiking in the summer) its a good thing too! Never know what you will run across here in these mountains, just ask one of our rangers.Yes, it is strange that we humans seem to be a bit secretive about our own reproduction
