Somewhat similar to the scales of butterflies, spiders of the family Salticidae have large numbers of modified hairs that are called scales. This image shows a nice display of these features, amongst normal hairs, on the femur and patella (top) segments of a pedipalp. This from a good sized black jumping spider common in my locality.
