Though we lean upon the same balustrade, the colours of the mountain are different.

This is really nicely done Graham! Love the background and the way it looks suspended in space. Care to elaborate a bit on how you supported and illuminated the subject?

Pleased you like it!

The specimen was superglued to a pin tip which was Blue-Tacked to the stage at an angle by the pin-head. So it really was suspended in mid-air! The lighting used an inverted white plastic ointment pot as diffuser with hole cut in the base to look through. The background is the ground glass stage without transmitted illumination being used. The glass insert has a few blemishes giving a "cloudy" effect when out of focus. Main illumination was the 30 W Wild microscope lamp shone onto the ointment pot. Each exposure was 1 sec at ISO100, f4.5.

Post-processing was minimal, but included cloning out the mounting pin.

Two more images of this subject:

Image
This first one is of the underside. Not the most successful stack, as the nearest antenna and eye are not that sharp, but it shows some interesting detail, and also the method of mounting, which this time has not been cloned out. 37 images/Helicon. I have not edited out haloes etc. either. Wild M8 microscope

... and a detail shot of the feet. These weevils can hang on to things very firmly, and I think it is mainly due to the claws, as the pads do not seem to adhere to things offered against them under the microscope, although maybe the hairs will adhere to some surfaces. 25 images/Helicon. Wild M8. There is a little bit of camera purple fringing (it is not microscope CA).
