Mysis Shrimp

Post by pwnell »

I am 99% sure this is a mysis shrimp, found in the sumps of reef aquariums. I took a photo four years ago with my 1Ds3 and MP-E 65 from my South African aquarium, and yesterday using my E200 / 10x Plan Apo + 600D from my Canadian reef aquarium. Not sure if they are identical species, hard to say.

Anyways, just thought I'd show the difference between a photo using the MP-E 65 and the 10x objective of a microscope. Very different feel to the photo (oh I stitched together about 6 images as the shrimp was too large for a 10x).

Definitely a different feel, but I'm thinking that's due to front- versus back-lighting, not the different lenses.

Nice job on the stitching.

Here is a 50% crop from the microscope. I managed to get a lot more resolution... Will try the MP-E again soon:

Resolution-wise, you should be able to get quite a lot more from the 10X objective than from the MP-E. I presume your 10X Plan Apo is around NA 0.45, where wide open at 5X the MP-E is still only about NA 0.15.

NA 0.25 for a 10X Plan Apo? All the 10X Plan Apo's I can find on Nikon's website and price list are NA 0.45. NA 0.25 sounds like a Plan Achromat. It'll still do better than the MP-E, but not so much.

I apologise, you are right. It is the Phase Contrast Plan Achromat.

Here is the tail section under polarized light, showing what I presume to be its muscles.
