Amphipod

Post by Wim van Egmond »

The sea is the most amazing source for microscopists. Book a holiday to the sea, take your microscope with you and throw out your plankton net.

Well, that is what I would like. The plankton bloom is about to start so I hope to take some new images soon. If I have time. This is still from last year. An amphipod shrimp that lives in red algae. Very hard to find the ID. Hopeless! :)

What kind of forum is this? :) I have to do everything myself. O.k. I will stop being lazy and try to find an ID on my own.

Let's see. It could well be Ischyrocerus anguipes.

HAHA, I'd love to be able to help with ID's, but I don't even know where to start.

Wim, is this is reflected light? Also how do you get your background so black? Do you darken in post processing? Beautiful photo by the way.

Wim,

wonderful image ! What optics have you used for this shot ? The colours, details and the contrast are amazing.

As an avid reefkeeper, I have taken many photos of amphipods and know how hard it can be due to their opaqueness. Very well done.

Thank you friends,

it was shot with a 10X neofluar and a stitch of 3 stacks. :) It is normal dark field. if you set it up well you can get a very deep black. I used a high NA condenser and immersed it with water. It is also a matter of making a good illumination.
