Unknown marine eggs

Post by Charles Krebs »

Finally got around to dragging the plankton net again. Nowhere near as much plankton as I get in the late spring and summer (water temp is only about 45 degree F this time of year... increasing to a "sizzling" 56 or so in summer). I did find a fair number of these eggs (at least I think that is what they are), but no idea what they are from. I thought Franz had posted something like this a while back but I could not find it.

Typically there were 3 or 5 eggs in each circular mass. In a profile (side view) each egg mass was shaped sort of like a derby hat (or UFO ) Each individual egg was just about 150 micron in diameter.

Charles,

Wow, very nice!

Did you remember at what flash power you did shoot with the 40x?

Thanks all!

Rogelio..

These were actually shot with continuous light, but with the 40X I will typically be about 2 stops under full power (DIC). With the 60X and 100X I'm at full or maybe -1 stop (with DIC lighting).

Nice! It could be the egg of Littorina. It's a flat disk. isn't it?

I do believe you have it Wim. Flat on one side with a shallow "dome" on the other... as in Fig. 7, 8. Thanks!
