Strange world Mitch. Pediastrum you can find in every water in The Netherlands. I think I've never seen a drop of pondwater unther the microscope whitout a few of these alga in different specs.
By the way, it's not realy a desmid. A desmid is only one cell.
Pediastrum can contain up to more than 70 cells.

We do not have little ponds here. Most of our open water is either the Mississippi River, or swamps and backwaters along the river, and none of them what you could call clean water. It's all muddy. Worse, all water is usually frozen solid from October to March or later.
