the marine diatom Eucampia

Post by Franz Neidl »

I have the impression that the winter is the time for the diatoms. The first time I find now Eucampia sp. I dont know the name of the species. Maybe it is E. cornuta?

well, early spring is best, but the autumn/winter turbulence brings nutrients/silica back into the water column, supporting diatom growth.

Your images pretty much resemble the forms in our waters, which is E. zodiacus.
I have never seen E cornuta, but girdle bands should be visible in water mounts for this species.

Best wishes, René

Thank you Renè. Your answer about the water turbulence and the silica is bringing me to a better understanding of the ecology of the diatoms.

Excellent image quality. He looks like a broken transmission gasket. :)
