A marine larva from the Anthozoa ?

Post by Franz Neidl »

During the summer last year I made this picture from a marine animal. It was about 500 µm long and had few cilia. Has it to do with the Anthozoa?

Hello Franz,

another fascinating subject. I think it is a late (non-feeding) doliolaria larva of a holothurian (sea cucumber). It shows the developing tentacles of the following (feeding) pentactula larva. A different level of focus should show rows of cilia running around the body along pigmented (yellowy - orange) bands. The larva looks similar to the tunicate Doliolium hence "doliolaria".

thank you!

best regards,
Brian
