A Very Large Rotaria sp. Rotifer - 500µm - Video

Post by Mitch640 »

This is one of the biggest rotifers I have ever seen. He is about 500µm long, His foot has a spread of 100µm. Unfortunately, I did not get any stills. Can someone give a positive ID for this giant? I could not find any images that showed the same foot as this one.

The Video.

Jacek, I have a Nikon Fluophot scope and mount a Canon T1i DSLR on the trinocular head, on top of two sets of extension tubes.

The Canon T1i will shoot stills and Video. I recorded this at 1280x720p HD @ 30fps and used Premiere Pro CS5 to edit the original .mov file.

Mitch, while I can't confirm the species, I certainly can tell it's amazing you could find such a giant... I saw rotifers of such size only in antarctic samples, I literally could pick them up with a pipette with naked eyes. Nice vid.

Thanks for looking Starshade. I had never seen one this big or this exact species before. He came in a jar of pond water sent to me by a friend who collected it in Tennessee. This jar had all kinds of new microbes I had never seen till now, especially a nice variety of Difflugia testate amoebas. :)

Hello Mitch
I think that your animal is Rotaria

I posted this beast during the last month or so. Rotifer Rotaria.
Look for 2 eyes on the proboscus, look at the foot for a distinctive toe. This fellow opens up ike a car antenna..up to 1 mm and then folds in again. It also gives birth to live ones..often find the embryo where the egg is in other rotifers.

Thanks again John and Rogelio. With your new lead John, I was able to look him up on Google and verify the name. So as long as this guy is, he's just a shorty compared to some of his race that can get to over a mm in length.

Rogelio, thanks for the link to the Condenser. I won it, and it arrived here Friday. It's like brand new, if not brand new. The paint and glass were free of fingerprints and and the glass had no polishing scratches, so I think it may have been on a scope once, to test, then put back in a box. :)
