Arcella, once again

Post by ralfwagner »

Hello,

after Bernhard showed an encysted Arcella a few days ago I found a very vital Arcella gibbosa. First picture shows the bottom side with the amoeba itself. The amoeba cotains some booties. The dark, great dot probably is the pulsating vacuole. The shell here is shown in top view, therefore results a round cross section:

Next picture shows the side view. The amoeba shows off two nice pseudopodia:

In phase contrast the pseudopodia can be seen best. Colorless ektoplasma can clearly be distinguished from the grained entoplasma:

Finally there is a video (divx-coded, 2,9 mb). It shows the (rather fast) movement of the Arcella (phase contrast). It is clearly visible that first the colorless ektoplasma moves in front of the pseudopodium, followd by the grained entoplasma. Have fun!

Hello Ken,

thanks to Mr. Einstein we know that speed is relativ. As an Arcella this one moves very fast, on the other hand you are a lucky microscopist if you meet a paramecium that moves so incredibly slow and gives you the chance to make nice shot of it.

Wonderful photos Ralf and the video is a great addition. The second picture really shows the 3D nature on the creature.

Hello Doug,

I am with you. I like the second picture best, too. It shows many characteristics of that Arcella in only one shot.
