Three images of a marine diatom. DIC flash focus stacks. The first image is the flat face and a full stack (aprox 20 frames) resulting in an image dominated by the diatoms surface detail. The second image is a partial stack so you can see inside the diatom. The third image is a edge view, again a partial stack to show internal structure.

Very neat. Lots of good delicious sharpness. :D Just think of the totally awesome pictures we are able to get these days with digital cameras and some software that any Joe can buy and use it the house. Amazing. Let me see someone do that with film. Ha!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I'd go one step further and say that many of the members of this forum have modified equipment, including automated focus stacking and flash capability which result in image quality far beyond what is seen in mainstream academia. I've also looked at new microscope products and I haven't come across models which have these combinations of features, DIC, flash, automated focus stacking and image analysis. I'm sure you can buy these types of systems but I'm guessing they are in the 20K price range.

What is DIC? I have seen it on certain objectives but cannot find any other reference.

So, some microscopes come with flash capabilities? Or it that part of the camera that is connected to the microscope?

And what kind of image analysis? Someone was telling me that a friend of theirs (I know, one of those stories) works in a lab that has a microscope that can be programmed to run certain tests. Which they do every night. When they come back in the morning they have their results.

Focus stacking is one step in the process of obtaining three dimensional information and you are correct in stating that a number of companies have automated diagnostic methods for tissue analysis.
