Looks like Microcystis, smells like Microcystis, but slightly purplish.
Oh well, I can live with that.

this is probably the bacterium Thiocystis violacea.

Many thanks for your ID. Thiocystis violacea appears to be the correct Id.
I have some photos (somewhere) of a Rotifer with this organism ingested

Charles I believe that this organism was once called Planocarcina but I agree material is quite scarce.
