Volvox aureus

Post by ralfwagner »

Hello,

Volvox is and surely will be one of my favorite microsubjects. Recently there was a bloom of volvox in my garden pond and so here are two shots in darkfield technique together with electronic flash:

My favorite locations are sunny eutrophic ponds and there between algae and duck weed. Easy to concentrate from the water with the aid of planctonnet (a nylon coffeefilter is a simple but effective solution). Volvox is not seldom and can be found all over the world, mainly in spring.

They are sure beautiful. I could watch them roll around all day and not get bored.

I have a nice net on a 4 foot handle, and we have the kind of ponds here that you describe. I'll get out and see if I can find some soon.. :)
