Is that the shed skin of a copapod? Looks like the diatoms got themselves trapped. :)

They indeed seem trapped but I have observed diatoms that seemed attracted by the remains of a cover-slip squashed copepod. They were moving through the organic remains. It could be that I was imagining it but perhaps they could obtain some nutrients form it.

I have seen the same thing. Diatoms definitely seem to be able to find the food and move to it.
