larva

Post by Wim van Egmond »

I have not taken any new images this year. I had so many images in my archive that were not processed yet.

Perhaps fun to do a quiz. Does anyone have an idea what this is? This is still quite cute but the adult is a monster.

Maybe a larva from an Amphipode.
Nice picture!

Is it a marine species? A squid or octopus of some sort maybe?

I wouldn't even hazard a guess, lovely shot though!

(Gah okay then, a crab of some kind?)

Something in the family Lithodidae? Stone crab, King crab?

It is a fresh water species. I will look up the picture of the mother. Beware, she is creepy!

Thank you Fred, aquatic life is one of the nicest subjects for microscopy so do give it a try!

This is the mother. Isn't she sweet? Found in the Vroesepark pond in Rotterdam. Argulus, the fish louse.

Vroesepark you say? That's 5 min on the bike away for me !
Think I rip one of my wife's stockings and have a go at it. *
Not much bugs nowadays anyway , so hardly any subject for under the stereoscope of to photograph.
Can't wait untill spring arrives.

I read that Argules is a real pest for people who keep a pond in their backyard or keep Goldfish or Koi's.
They eat the same way flies sort of do by injecting digestive enzymes into the fish and then suck out the liquidised body fluids.
Brrr, real nasties, but somehow also interesting.

*EDIT: that is, to fabricate a fishing net. Don't want your thoughts to wonder off any other direction.

Funny that.. Seems the active Dutch members all live pretty close to each other. I'm from Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel :)

Excellent images. Are those suckers on the adult? Looks like two suckers up near the head, to attach itself to a fish.
