In response to both your posts Charlie, these videos are just as astounding as your photographs. That amoeba was awesome at 4X, I am eagerly awaiting for you to post one of Lacrymaria olor, that would be a sight to see. I also took a look at your other videos, some a little on the "hot" side but as you said your just getting started at this video stuff, however, they are great videos just the same. :D

Excellent Charlie!

You have the lighting, backgrounds, contrasts, et.al. methods mastered from your photo work. Now the camera manufacturers need to get busy and create a sharper movie mode to accomodate all the accelerating skills.

Videos like this will advance biological knowledge.

Congratulations.

Tom

It's fun and frustrating at the same time. Once the actual hardware and technique are sorted out, I think the biggest frustration for me will still be the large amount of compression needed to make short clips accessible over the internet. Quality sure takes a hit. (Can you imagine the despair if you had to crunch your jpeg image posts down to about 5-7K instead of 200K ](*,) )

Surprising how Firewire, USB2, and cable internet all of a sudden seem barely adequate once you contemplate higher quality video! I suppose in the not too distant future we will look back and just shake our heads, wondering how we ever got by with the constraints we now have.

But on the other hand, we work with what we have, and it is marvelous to be able to record and share these "micro" clips with anyone in the world that has internet access. Not that long ago it would have been hard to imagine this!

Not too long ago I just read a short piece about something called Internet 2. It is supposed to be much more efficent than what we now have and a lot faster, if that makes any sense? Anyway thought I would throw this in for someone to chew around on, there was not a lot of details or stuff said about it in the article, just that it is supposedly much better than what we have now.

An interesting collection of videos Charles. I've watched every one several times and even called my wife up to see a couple of them. The 4X amoeba with a "stomach" full of diatoms and arcella was particularly compelling. Being a newcomer to the hobby/interest I have yet to see an amoeba "in the flesh" so to speak.

I will be watching out for future UNMISSABLE productions from "Krebs Micro Movies Inc".

Bruce :D

Super stuff Charlie!

By the way. Did you ever identify that strange ciliate?

I have some images ready to be posted but I have to find some time to upload them! Must say that I am a bit overworked so I also try to stay away from the computer a bit. :)
