Corycaeus weaponry; Diaptomas; diatoms

Post by Charles Krebs »

I got so caught up in working with the Corycaeus eye shots a couple weeks ago that I didn't work up the images of some other subjects from the salt-water sample.

Here are some of the formidable weapons on the rear appendages of the Corycaeus mentioned above. So if you are a suitable meal, and it sees you with those big eyes, this is what you deal with next!

Here is a Diaptomas. While I think I prefer the brightfield version of one photographed last June, darkfield is always interesting. (And the antennae are always impressive to see).

Here are some diatoms. Upper is darkfield with 10X, lower is oblique brightfield with 20X.

The small blades look like they can move, maybe like a scissors? Your images are to die for, especially the last few diatoms. Beautiful and so detailed. :)

Nice Diatom drum kit! I do like copepods in darkfield. It gives the impression of the oceanic deeps.
