Medium Sized Fly

Post by cozdas »

I'm not sure about the ID. I found this guy on the floor almost-dead when I realized my cats are playing with something. I put the little poor thing int the deep freezer to end its pain ASAP without damaging the body.

First image is with 4x objective, the last two are with 10x objective (the last one is a crop of the previous one). All with direct projection on Canon 7D (because of the mechanical problems the sensor is further away from where it should be, so the real magnifications are higher I believe).

Used a single flash (Canon 430EX II) with a half ping-pong ball diffuser. Zerene stacker, light room for tweaking.

You can check the higher resolutions here

Very nice!

I suspect the small light spot that looks like a "nipple" on each ommatidium in the last image is actually a reflection of a reflection of the light source, from the front of the objective next to the lens. What do you think of this idea?

I think that small light spot is there because the flash light leaking in between the objective body and the ping-pong ball hole as I could not open a perfect circular hole there. Probably the flash light reflects off from the upper section of the objective and reflects down to the specimen through that small crack. I need to cut another ball but this time more precisely :)
