This is a very common species around my lights at night. And it looks as if this one had a rough night. Actually they all looked about equally disheveled.

Direct projection with Nikon CF N 4/0.13. 89 image ZS stack.

20/0.40 Nikon M Plan. 20X on sensor.

Charles, excellent as always! I especially appreciate the antenna close-up.

See http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... hp?t=10067 for some discussion of working distance and prices.

I picked up an M Plan 20X 0.40 ELWD 210/0 a couple of years ago for $200. I have not tracked prices recently.

Eddy,

Nikon CF M Plans, 210/0:

20/0.35 SLWD wd 19.9mm
20/0.40 ELWD wd 10.5mm
20 /0.40 LWD wd 6mm
20/0.40 wd 2.7mm

So the "LWD" is workable at 6mm. I do prefer the 10.5mm working distance of the "ELWD". (The SLWD has great working distance but the NA drops a little to 0.35).

I too have not been keeping up on the current "going price". The price of the one you referenced does not seem exceptionally high, but it's not a bargain either. If you are patient you might be able to get an "ELWD" for the same cost or even a little less. (Don't forget about the "BD" versions. The working distances will be the same when the outer collar is removed, and now there is an adapter readily available on ebay).

Those shots are really nice, I love the way you get such clean results, with none o very little halos and artifacts.
I own a 20/0.40 LWD my self and it is workable, but I would preffer a ELWD instead. With flat objects is OK but with eyes and things like that Shadows do show. One way I found to avoid this is by using some silver reflecting paper inside the ping-pong ball, on the oposite side of the flash entrance, it does helps to even the light
