Varroa mite

Post by Gerd »

Image

This is varroa jacobsoni, an external parasite of honey bees,
visible with the naked eye. Meanwhile all bee colonies in
Germany are infected with varroa, i think it is a worldwide problem.
In these early August weeks apiarist do the last treatments to reduce the
varroa populations in their colonies and it is easy to get some mites
for photomicrography.
This is a brightfield stack with 10 pics, the mite was prepared using
caustic potash solution to clear the body and then covered in glycerine.
Scale bar is 0.5mm.
Thanks for looking.

Gerd,

I've seen these on honeybees at "macro" magnifications, but never as clearly and well defined as you show us here. Very nicely done!
