The gold wasp Chrysis ignita

Post by Martin Kreutz »

Hi forum,

I would like to show you some images from the phantastic coloured gold wasp Chrysis ignita. A similar wasp was already photographed by Rik:

http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... php?t=7744

"My" gold wasp was found in the southern Germany two days ago and has a total length of 6 mm. On the following image you can get an imagine of the "real size":

Image

It was my intention to create an image of the complete wasp. For this purpose I've taken 380 images (5 batches of each 76 images) with my Olympus 4X UPlanFl objective (no projective was used). After the stacking process using Combine Z the resulting 5 images were carefully arranged in Photoshop. By this process I could achieve a total view of this phantastic coloured insect:

By this link you can get a closer view to an image with higher resolution:

The yellow particles on the surface of the wasp are pollen from the camomile.

Nice! Is this the same species as the "ruby tailed wasp" recently shot by lauriek, HERE?

Martin; this is precious.

When I see these photos I consider to buy, sometimes, a stereomicrocope.

Hi Abel,

the image of the wasp wasn't take with a stereomicrocope but with my "common" microscope (an Olympus BX50). I used a stereomicroscope only for arrangement of the wasp. The 4X objective of my BX50 has a much better resolution and quality than my stereomicroscope. Furthermore my camera (an Olympus E-P1) is adapted to the BX50. My stereomicroscope is not equipped with a camera.

Hello Martin; I work with an OLYMPUS BX 51; OLympus has objectives of 2X and 4X. I suppose that I need a system of special lighting, is it correct?

Hi Abel,

I know your equipment already from the french forum and I'm sure you can achieve the same results with this following illumination technique, because we use almost the same microscopes. Click on the video I've taken some minutes ago. It says more than thousand words!

Marvellous video Martin

I prefer microorganisms but it is possible that I realize photos with the objective of 2X, when I buy it.....

Thanks ¡

Martin: I think this would make a great Photosynth. Then we could really see all of the detail.
