Diatoms from mountain stream

Post by Charles Krebs »

I sampled a small lake and mountain stream yesterday. (That's where I found the desmid I posted earlier). I scraped a small piece of what looked like a very "fine" algae off of a rock in a fast moving stream. It was predominantly chains of the diatoms seen here.

Such intricate structure...

The word wonderful is so often used that it has lost some of its ability to express awe.

These images are certainly full of wonder.

Craig,

The geometry alone is fascinating... one reason I decided to do a b+w rendition.

If you look you can see the "mucilage" that holds them together at the corners. I probably should have added scale bars to these, but the total scene width recorded (left to right) is 0.18mm or 0.078inch.
