Polyphemus

Post by gpmatthews »

Today was the Quekett Microscopical Club excursion to Basingstoke Canal (at Brookwood). A splendid time was had by all, and we enjoyed sorting through a wide selection of species of Cladocera. Here are two specimens of Polyphemus pediculus

The first is probably male, the second a female with brood:

Though we lean upon the same balustrade, the colours of the mountain are different.

Graham,

The lighting in the first image... Could you expand upon the description of the applied technique?

Craig, the first image is a differential interference contrast image (ICT is Leitz-speak for DIC)
