Very nice! The illumination really is excellent. Is this conventional darkfield using a condenser, or did you do something special?

Lovely -- I like simple solutions that work really well!

Am I correct in thinking that the polarizer is to cut specular reflections from the left side of the mite?

Correct. Simply slided a piece of the film polariser between specimen and diffused Jansjo and adjusted with the top rotatable insert.
Maybe that cross-pol with DIC prism combination created bluish cast in the legs ...
