nother basalt mineral specimen...

Post by crocoite »

Hi all

This is a specimen of two carbonate minerals, calcite (the orange hemisphere which is 2cm across) and aragonite. They occur in cavities in basalt at the Bundoora Quarry, Victoria, Australia.

Beautiful photograph Steve. :D The chemistry and physics envolved in crystal formation must be staggering. Great details in this image, thanks. :D

Thanks Ken. Complicated by the fact that both calcite and aragonite are the same chemical combination!

Very nice shot Steve. Do you go and collect these specimens yourself? I just read something on the two groups and I think I will have to go retake my chemistry schooling (36 years ago) (you made me go and look for more info :smt023 ) http://mineral.galleries.com/minerals/c ... alcite.htm. We have Rhodochrosite beads at the store..did not know they were in the calcite group

Hi Doug

I have collected at Bundoora (but this specimen came from friends of mine - they have asked me to help dispose of their collection, and I came back from their place in Echuca, Victoria with around 15,000 specimens!). I was originally responsible for opening the site (now closed) to collectors when I lived in Melbourne. Here's a shot of the back of my car with the back seat down too (a Toyota Kluger 4WD)...

I bet I know where most of the good ones are getting disposed too...... :D

Looks like the bosses jeep after he comes back from one of his buying trips for the store.

Heh, heh. Seriously, it's been given to me as a sort of inheritance. I've been told to take what I want. The previous owners were like grandparents to our kids through the 80s and early 90s, but unfortunately, age and poor health has taken its toll and they are moving into a smaller house.

Interestingly, what you see in the photo is about 15% of the total collection!

Well, all I can say is "they made the right choice on who to give it to" I am sure it is in good hands.
