Crinoid Fossil

Post by beetleman »

It is actually parts of crinoids and bivalves from upstate New York, USA. Crinoids were the dominant echinoderm (starfish, sea urchins) of the Paleozoic with more than 6,000 described species, there are only 600 or so species living today. They are called sea lillies & feather stars and feed by filtering the water column. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crinoids

Nice shot Doug. Even though I don't collect fossils, I do like echinoderms. The ones in your shot are all pieces of stems. It's quite hard to find fossils of the heads...

There are some good ones shown here --> http://www.fossilmuseum.net/Fossil_Gall ... inoids.htm

Bits and pieces though they may be Doug, these are wonderful. :D I have a fossile specimen lying around here somewhere, I can't remember though what it is off hand. To bad I can't take a macro of myself, one of those young whipper snappers at work called me an old fossil just the other day.
