In Greek mythology, myrtle was considered to be sacred to Aphrodite. The tradition of brides wearing a crown of myrtle on their wedding day was common in ancient Greece.
The plants are grown for myrtle oil, used in perfume manufacture and as a condiment, and as ornamental shrubs used in xeriscaping, where they are valued for their tolerance of hot, dry summers.

Beautiful flower & picture Nikola, and you had to make me look up a new word
QUOTE: Xeriscaping refers to landscaping in ways that do not require supplemental irrigation. It is promoted in areas that do not have easily accessible supplies of fresh water. The word Xeriscaping was coined by combining xeros (Greek for "dry") with landscape. Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, and care is taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off. XeriscapeTM and the xeriscape logo are registered trademarks of the Denver Water, the City of Denver's Water Department. They were created by the Front Range Xeriscape Task Force of Denver Department in 1981.

Neve been all that fond of Wikipedia. To many know it alls can get in there and really mess things up sometimes. Although they claim to keep an eye on things as to accuracy of content, there are still many conflicting bits of information to be interjected supposedly by those who claim they know what they are talking about.
Still an intersting bit of information there Doug and glad that you brought it out. A very nice shot of the Myrtle there too Nikola, good work.

They used flowers such as this to hide their BO. In ancient times, many ppl didn't take baths for a LONG period of time. When they did, the man of the house was first, followed by the lady of the house, the kids, then the servants. Oh, and they all used the same water. So really, only the man of the house had clean water in which to bathe.
Aren't you glad for showers today
