Fly head with a Floppy head controlled stack

Post by acerola »

I had an idea yesterday, I wrote it down in the equipment section. This idea did not let me sleep, so I done it today.
Here is the picture I created. It is not too good. I see some of the faults, but feel free to point out others.
  • The subject is not the best, it stayed in alcohol for a whole day. I'm not experienced with dead subject but it is not nice.
  • The step of the disk head is too large. I have to set my aperture to F8 to connect the gaps.
  • This is my first 10 picture stack so I did not know much from Helicon Focus.
On the other hand positioning with the head is quite quick, but sometimes I managed to jump two step instead of one.

So here is my first try, and maybe my last for this setup:

Equipment: Canon 20D , Canon 100mm macro + 55mm F1.4 Minolta reversed, Canon 580 ex flash, and a Sony floppy disk drive t move the subject

And a crop to see the unevenness of the focused area:

Looks like you may have a number of in and out of focus areas on that eye. Maybe it is surface texture causing it. :-k Dunno but nice shots just the same. :D

I would say it is not too bad. There are some areas with very nice detail. You seem to have a handle on what you did wrong. I would say ten frames is not enough to capture this subject at this magnifacation. You need something that will give you smaller movements of the camera or subject. I use a macro rail to move the camera. A sony Floppy drive?

Yes the floppy drive moved the fly. You can see the setup here.
