Emerging midge

Post by Charles Krebs »

In looking over one of my pond samples I found a midge pupa that appeared about ready to emerge. I put it in a small "tank", but things progressed much more quickly than I expected. I only got a couple of images before it emerged very rapidly. Then I got just a few shots more before it flew off.

Very neat pictures.
It's a shame it did not wait for you. :)

Amazing how quickly those wings extended from that casing. No fuzzy antennae just yet though. This is really neat, first time I think, that I have ever seen this. :D

WOW  Incredible photos Charles. Talk about being at the right place at the right time and capturing excellent photos all at the same time.

Well Ken, as you know so well, as long as this midge is sitting there admiring it's new "form" you could also call it "fish food". So I would think it would want to get airborne as soon as possible.

Excellent pictures, really like the second one. I would bet that this is quite a rare photograph, and really hard to get this beatiful.
