Three for the price of one

Post by JoanYoung »

On a recent trip to the game park, I was trying to get a shot of the butterfly and the bee on one flower. When I got home and put the pictures onto the PC I discovered the stick grasshopper which I had not seen before. Amazing how ones eye is distracted by other things sometimes.
The butterfly is a Brown-veined White Butterfly (Belenois aurota).

Unexpected hangers-on are always an interesting surprise!

A couple of these guys look unusual to me....Are you sure that's a bee? My instinctive response is it is some sort of fly, though that's from overall feel rather than any specific knowledge, of which I have none on South African bugs!

The "grasshopper" looks very interesting and unusual. Are you sure he's not a "walking stick" or stick insect? Again, I know nothing of your fauna beyond "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!"

Wait, you don't have tigers or bears, do you?!

LOL!! Sorry, no tigers and bears Mike!! But I can go and take some at the zoo if you want? :)

For once I am sure of the insects here. I at first thought the grasshopper was also a stick insect, but I went and looked it up and it is definitely classified as a grasshopper.

Hey!! This is Africa remember...third world and different!!

Very nice finding Joan. :D
Judging by shape, (especially antennae and head) your grasshopper looks very similar to one I've posted earlier. 8)

Lovely capture (even if a bit of it was unexpected) :)

Thanks for the nice comment Nikola. You are right, they are almost the same. :)

WOW, that is a beautiful trio of insects Joan. Did you take any closer photos?

Thanks Doug. No unfortunately I took only this one. If I had seen the stick grasshopper before I would have taken more. :)
