That SP-320 really produces some nice images but its the guy behind the lens who really stands out. Nice sharp contrasts in this wasp and great colors, thanks. :D

In this case I even didn't see what's inside the frame. I've extended my hand and fired several times. There are the photographs with a half of the wings against sky, ground only, or an air... just empty air! Then I choose better ones.

Intrigued by the "focal length 8mm" as that would be a very wide angle lens if mounted directly on the camera. What lens were you using and was it on extension?

I was not familiar with the Olympus SP-320 so just looked it up. It is not a detachable lens camera as far as I can see, but I still cannot see in it's given zoom range where the 8mm focal length comes from? Enlighten me please?

Sensor size is 7.18 x 5.32mm, therefore 8mm is equivalent for 38mm in big lenses 35mm film world.
I can give you links to rjlittlefield's (Rik Littlefield) discussion about Olympus SP-320. I hope you'll find it helpful.

Thanks Nikola, that clears things up for me. At first I thought you were shooting with a DSLR before I looked the Olympus up.

I make it that to get the same field of view on my Nikon D200 I would need a 25.3mm lens on the APS-C sized sensor (1.5 crop compared to 35mm) which is around the same as for a Canon's 1.6 crop?

This is less than half the focal length of most of DSLR's normal short macro lenses (55mm-60mm), let alone the 90mm-105mm normally used in insect photography. Plus these also have a narrower angle of view on an APS-C or similar sensor than on 35mm film cameras (60mm on APS-C sensor = 90mm lenses angle of view on 35mm. 105mm on APS-C gives same angle of view as 157.5mm lens)

Obviously, a wide angle lens would need less extension or focus travel to reach 1:1 and above. No wonder your shots look different!
