Mushrooms from South Africa - plus 2 new ones

Post by JoanYoung »

We do not have interesting colours in mushrooms. All I can find are brown and white ones. I will add the other two in this series tomorrow.

Pic1 could have been Disney's inspiration for Cinderella's skirt don't you think :D

October is THE season for fungi in the northern hemisphere Joan. Bracket fungi can be seen at almost any time but ground fungi tend to appear from very late August to maybe late November (peaking October) - of course varying slightly from year to year depending on rainfall etc. I wonder if your peak season for fungi in the southern hemisphere would fall around April(ish)?

You could be right Bruce. LOL!! When I look at it I get more a feeling of Thumberlina though.
I am going to have to see when our season is Bruce. Only been doing macro / close ups for about two or so months now and do not know when are the best times in the year. We have had quite a bit of rain over the last few weeks so these are shooting out in the lawns.
I must add that I went looking in pine forests for something interesting like your red one, but could not find any mushrooms there, let alone nice colourful ones.

You know I have never really watched to see what time of year mushrooms pop up either, though I did know that jelly fungi were quite prevelant during the cooler months. Seems as though Bruce is right on the money though, because I have not seen to many mushrooms this year until here of late. Good images there Joan, Jims just jealous, that's all.

Joan - There is a definite hunting season for the dedicated mycophile but fortunately for us many species can be seen all year round or may be seen in spring and summer. Often these are quite bizarre looking, growing on (old) fallen tree trunks and moss covered tree stumps. Most are quite small but (from a photographer's point of view) make up for their diminutive size by being brightly coloured or by having unusual and sometimes quite variable shapes. All good subjects for the close-up photographer.

Good hunting!

Bruce :D

Thanks Ken. I was happy to find some at last after seeing all the good ones you posted. Between Jim wanting to eat my mushrooms and you wanting to put my beautiful buck in the smoker, looks like we got a great party going here with Jims wine added in. LOL!!

I will be watching out for which time is good here Bruce and go back to the pine forest every now and then to check.

Thanks for the great comments everyone. I will post the other two pics tomorrow.

Can't find much on S. African fungi Joan, but this one does include a check list so you can Google the species:-

You are a star. Thanks for this Dave. I checked it out and there is an interesting article on mushrooms there.
