Macro and IR

Post by arlon »

I love macro and I like IR so I tried to combine the two but find it difficult to find subjects in such a small space that enough tonal contrast to be interesting.. Here's an attempt anyway.

Arlon,

Interesting pictures!

I am very curious about the technique.

Are these from film or direct from a digital camera?

I am under the impression that most digital cameras include filters to "block" IR, but I don't how much attenuation they actually provide, or at what wavelengths.

Has your camera had its filter removed? What IR-passing filter did you use in front of the lens? What lighting conditions, aperture, shutter speed, etc. did you use for these?

Thanks very much,

Rik, these where shot with a nikon D70 that I converted to full time IR by replacing the filter that's in front of the sensor. I tried a few IR pictures with a screw on R72 filter and liked the pictures well enough to buy a used D70 and convert it.

These pictures are in one of my pbase folders and you can read all the exif information on them HERE.

Looks very different from the IR that I was, at one time, used to seeing but still quite close. Good shots. :D

Interesting post Arlon - it would be interesting to see the "same" images in natural light for comparison purposes.

Yes it would be very interesting to see if there are major differences, and if something like the hidden patterns that you get in flowers to attact polonators turn up, but i guess there arnt too many things except pit vipers that actually see IR?

The trains in your photo album have a very interesting look with the different IR contrasts. Great and interesting photos Arlon

Visible light of the caterpiller is posted down a little was in the "bird dropping mimic" post. IR doesn't ever appear to bring out hidden patterns. At least none I've ever seen. More the opposite actually. I'd love to get into UV, that's where there seems to be a lot of unseen detail just waiting to be discovered..
