Red Spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax)

Post by Ken Ramos »

Most of the summer, I had not seen any butterflies other than a Skipper or two and one Eastern Swallowtail, at least down here in the foothills anyway. I had the fortunate occassion though, to photograph this Red Spotted Purple, only after having previously photographed the Pawpaw Sphinx caterpillar, that I posted earlier. Here take a look... :D

We have nothing like this species in the UK - sadly  .

Beautiful satin sheen nicely captured - it all looks very "natural" in this well balanced exposure.

They are about the size of an Eastern Swallowtail and at first that is what I thought this one was, until I downloaded it. Then I noticed there were no "swallowtails" on the trialing edges of the wings, so the search began. Thanks Bruce :D

Very Beautiful Ken. The camera did a nice job on the blue color (sorry, the camera does nothing without you!) and I like the way it is arranged in the diagonal direction. :smt023

Thanks Doug :D Wish I could get my 30D in on some of this stuff but the G7 is so handy, it is creating a bad habit for me grabbing it instead. :D

Thanks Adrian and Jordan :D , most all the butterflies I see are the Eastern Swallowtails and Skippers, though sometimes a Hairstreak or two. So, it is nice to see these once in awhile. :)
